The Subaru Legacy has emerged as a hot contender in the very competitive midsize family sedan segment. Part of the reason is Subaru's sterling reputation for safety, but the Legacy is a good-looking four-door, with standard all-wheel drive (a huge plus if you live anywhere with bad weather), plenty of high tech features and very good fuel economy for its class, especially compared to cars like the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry.

The Legacy, which is available in five trim levels, is a particularly good value in the 2.5i Premium model. In addition to standard features like all-wheel drive, automatic headlights, a rearview camera, Bluetooth phone and audio and Subaru's STARLINK infotainment touchscreen interface, the Premium edition adds alloy wheels (versus standard steel wheels), the All-Weather package (heated front seats, heated mirrors and windshield wiper de-icer), dual-zone climate control, a larger, 7.0-inch touchscreen and a better, six-speaker sound system. A sunroof is available as an option.
Under the hood, the 2017 Subaru Legacy Premium is equipped with a 2.5-liter boxer four-cylinder, which makes 175 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque. Gas mileage is excellent, especially for an all-wheel drive vehicle: the 2.5i's fuel economy is EPA-rated at 25 mpg city and 36 mpg highway.
Another Subaru hallmark is its stellar reputation for safety. The 2017 Legacy received a five-star overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and is a Top Safety Pick+ - when outfitted with optional front crash prevention - by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Subaru's available EyeSight® driver assist technology system uses two small cameras mounted on either side of the rearview mirror to monitor traffic movement, optimize cruise control and warn if you sway outside your lane. Its Pre-Collision Braking feature can even apply full braking force in emergency situations.
