The Subaru Outback is the automaker's signature model, and one of the most popular midsize crossovers currently on the market, especially in areas of the country that experience tough winters with roads coated in snow and ice. That's because the Outback comes standard with all-wheel drive; a feature that is only available as a more expensive add-on option on other competitors in its class.
The Outback is actually a wagon. It's closer in actual size to smaller SUVs like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4, but competes with the likes of the larger Ford Edge and Kia Sorento in terms of interior space. While it's available in six trim levels, Edmunds.com recommends going with the Outback 2.5i Premium edition, calling it nicely equipped with heated front seats and a good mix of technology: "a big wagon that can get down and dirty for not a lot of money."
The standard engine in the Outback is the 2.5-liter boxer four-cylinder, which makes 175 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque. Gas mileage is excellent, especially for an all-wheel drive vehicle: the 2.5i's fuel economy is EPA-rated at 25 mpg city and 33 mpg highway.
Another Subaru hallmark is its stellar reputation for safety. The 2017 Outback received a five-star overall rating, and five stars in every category, from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and is rated "good" overall - and a Top Safety Pick+ when outfitted with optional front crash prevention - by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). In fact, buyers may want to opt for the available EyeSight® driver assist technology system. EyeSight uses two small camera mounted on either side of the rearview mirror to monitor traffic movement, optimize cruise control and warn if you sway outside your lane. Its Pre-Collision Braking feature can even apply full braking force in emergency situations.
